We moved to our 40 acre blueberry farm in 1997. The farmhouse and fields were seriously neglected. The idea in purchasing the farm was that we would tear down the existing ranch house and build our dream home elsewhere on the property.
After tearing out termite infested walls -- that had literally eaten the foundation --, reroofing, residing, new windows, new plumbing, heating and electrical, carpet, paint.......you get the picture. We then couldn't afford to build something new. But that was okay. Our new baby was born here and we were comfortable.
Then baby #2 came along. We began feeling the squeeze from our small house, but didn't really feel it until more recently as the kids have branched out with more activity. We had to move forward with our new home.
The need for more room caused us to consider expanding our existing home. Could we just add on? Yes, but why? Was the existing home worth living in the rest of our lives and just making do? Jeff builds so many showcase homes for others -- why not his own family?
The search for a house plan began. After scouring magazines, books and attending several Home & Garden shows over the years we finally landed on this Appalachian style, squared-log home from Stonemill Log Homes out of Knoxville, Tennessee.
The model that we liked most was called the Prestwick, but of course we couldn't leave it the way it was. We modified, remodified, enlarged, expanded...and finally bought the package.
The site was prepped, water was found for a new well, the foundation poured and then we waited for our logs to arrive.
August 2007 was a very exciting month for us. Our blueberry harvest was better than ever, the logs arrived and the approval for our new theatre, Loves Street Playhouse, was in place!
Enjoy the progress photos of our new home. Jeff is having a great time building it . We can hardly wait to move in!
